The card: vocabulary, readings and grammar for every sentence
The card is the lesson. Each time a sentence ends, RainbowSay shows what was said, what it means, and the pieces it is built from — so you learn from the sentence instead of just getting past it.
What’s on the card
From top to bottom:
- The original sentence, transcribed as it was spoken.
- The translation in your output language. It is also spoken aloud unless you turned that off.
- Vocabulary — the words and phrases worth knowing, in the order they appear in the sentence, each with its reading and meaning. The reading is the pronunciation, spelled in the script of your output language so you can read it aloud — with English as the output, ashita for 明日 or nǐ hǎo for 你好. Words you can already read aloud get no reading.
- A grammar note — one short explanation of the most useful construction in this sentence: a verb form, a particle, a politeness level. When a phrase is an idiom or needs cultural context, a small extra note says so.
In a Speaking session the same card also points out mistakes in what you said.
Link words to their meaning
You don’t have to hunt through the vocabulary list.
- Hover a word in the original sentence: a small tooltip shows its reading and meaning right there, its row in the vocabulary list lights up, and so do the matching words in the translation.
- Hover a vocabulary row and the word lights up in the sentence.
- Click a word or a row to pin the highlight while you read; click anywhere else, or press Esc, to unpin it.
The card never scrolls under your pointer while you do this.
Not happy with the breakdown?
AI occasionally returns a thin or odd breakdown. The small ↻ next to the Original button redoes it for the same sentence, without replaying anything. (The ↻ next to Translation redoes the spoken translation instead.)
Size, opacity and position
- Drag the grip in the card’s corner: sideways changes the width, up and down changes the text size. The same two values are in Settings then Overlay then Main overlay then Size as Text size and Window width.
- Window opacity (Settings then Overlay then Main overlay then Appearance) sets how strongly the card’s background covers the video behind it, from 30% to 100%. The text always stays fully readable.
- Drag the card by its top row to put it anywhere on screen. It floats above other windows, including full-screen video, and follows you across Spaces.
Overlay changes apply immediately — you can adjust them while a card is showing.
Always show the controls, or keep the card minimal
Settings then Overlay then Main overlay then Appearance then Controls decides how the header’s gear and × and the bottom bar (replay, chat, Continue, suspend, stop) behave:
- Always show (the default) keeps them on screen, with the bar below the content.
- Auto-hide makes the card content-first: just the status, the translation and its notes. The controls slide in over the content when you point at the card — like a video player — and whenever they’re needed (the chat is open, a replay is playing, you are holding push-to-talk). At the start of a session and when the first card lands they peek out for a few seconds so you know where they are.
The × in the header only hides the overlay; your session keeps running. Bring it back with Show Overlay from the menu-bar icon.
